The wind betrays the InShore races: now all the anticipation is for the route to Naples

The dead calm dampens the morning's hopes

The crystalline waters off Tropea should have transformed into the ideal stage for the spectacular InShore races of this stage of the 2026 Giro d'Italia a Vela. The pre-race expectations, however, had to contend with a merciless weather pattern: a dense dead calm and forecasts calling for very light winds, unable to break the 5-knot barrier. Despite the unfavorable omens, the race committee tried everything, gathering the Waszp class athletes at 12:00 in the hope that a thermal boost could break the deadlock. The situation was different for the WingFoils: for the flying boards, which require much greater pressure to lift off the water, there was nothing they could do from the start.

The wait at sea and the "Intelligence on Alfa" flag
The fleet of futuristic Waszp dinghies remained rocking on the waves for a full two hours, with the racers wary and ready to seize every slightest breath of wind. But Eolo, today, decided not to show up for the rendezvous on the Costa degli Dei. Around 2:00 PM, realizing the impossibility of guaranteeing a fair and technical competition, the committee had no choice but to lower its hopes by displaying the "Intelligence on Alfa" signal on the official flagpole. A code that, in sailing jargon, decrees the end of the day's games and the invitation to return to the moorings for good. Thus, with a hint of bitterness but in full respect of nature's rhythms, the curtain falls on the coastal trials in Calabria.

Figaro 3 teams will brave the Tyrrhenian Sea toward Naples
With today's disappointment behind them, the attention of spectators and professionals will immediately shift to tomorrow morning. On Monday, June 29th, at 11:00 a.m., one of the most iconic and eagerly anticipated moments of this 2026 Giro d'Italia will begin: the start of the Figaro 3. The powerful foiling monohulls will leave Tropea and head toward Naples. It promises to be a fascinating yet tactically complex stage, a true test of endurance and strategy that promises to reshape the overall standings along the spectacular Tyrrhenian coast.
